[...] Will Algorithms Make Human Editors Obsolete? Not If Journalists Collaborate - Publishing 2.0 “Will algorithms replace human editors on the web? It’s a bogeyman question on one level, but ask any news site about the percentage of traffic they get from search engines — and what the trend looks like — and you’ll realize that algorithms are increasingly deciding what we pay attention to, what is important, what is relevant.” - The problem here is that traditional media has largely thrown up its hands in the face of Digg, et. al. rather than employing the smartest and brightest inside and outside their industry to come up with new, better, more interesting ideas that define their role in this new world.
I believe that with great links comes trust. If I, as a user, see that I can get valuable links that add to my knowledge-base and experience from a specific source then that becomes my destination. This is why I have balked and continue to balk at the mindset of some in charge of newspaper sites who refuse to link. I can't even believe that it's still an issue. It's the perfect opportunity to provide and illustrate increased value of your brand.

Sounds like you are suggesting that the long-time journalist's holy grail "The Scoop" give way to collaboration?

I like it! But then I'm not a journalist so I'm wondering it you'll be able to get the old grizzled veterans to sign on to this? Or will they have to die out first...?

[...] Will Algorithms Make Human Editors Obsolete? Not If Journalists Collaborate. Scott Karp: Instead of turning the task of sorting out all that data to algorithms, journalists need to get together and apply their skills to developing a powerful “linking voice.” With examples. (Scott is one of the sharpest pencils in the box; if you’re not subscribing to him, go do it right now.) [...]

This is an exciting idea, no doubt. It is correct to recognize the importance of links and aggregations of links. Instead of creating an entirely new platform, couldn't we all just do a better job over on Wikipedia?

Some of my most-valued information sources are bloggers who share all of the interesting links they come across on FriendFeed and Social Median. I appreciate their original analyses too, but the constant stream of good and relevant content from around the web is astonishingly helpful.

Check out Hutch Carpenter (http://friendfeed.com/bhc3) or Mike Fruchter (http://friendfeed.com/fruchter) for some good examples.
